Have you ever heard of Ttareungyi (따릉이) or seen those green bicycle stations on the side of the road and wondered how it works? Wonder no more! With this guide, you will be using Seoul’s public bikes to zoom around the city in no time.

What is Ttareungyi ?

Ttareungyi is a public bike service in Seoul. The service encourages the use of public transportation and staying active by offering affordable bike rental services. The service was released in an effort to reduce the use of private vehicles on the road and reduce traffic jams as well as air pollution.

As of the end of 2021, Seoul’s public transportation system includes 37,500 Ttareungi bicycles at 2,523 rental stations around Seoul.

How to use Ttareungyi

Get the Ttareungyi App

First things first, you will need to install the Ttareungyi apo. You can start by searching “Seoul Public bike” in the app or play store.

Next, register as a member. Registration is available to anyone 14 years of age or older for as long as you have a Korean ID or ARC.

If you’re a tourist and you want to use the daily pass, you can just proceed as a foreigner. But in case you want to use the bikes for the long term you should press the (회원) button. And sign up (회원가입).

Once you have input all of your information and completed registration, you can purchase a pass (이용권 구매).

Rental and Return

Rent

In case you can’t see any bike rental stations nearby, you can search for them using the map in the app. Each station has a number that shows how many bikes are available. You can tap on the station to see the number of each type of bike.

The first bicycle type is LCD and the second type is QR code. The difference between them is the rental process, which I will be explaining if you keep reading. Additionally, there is a third type of bicycle that is smaller, suitable for children and people who are below average height.

Note! The yellow rental stations on the map indicate stations where you can’t rent or return LCD type bikes.

QR Bikes

As I mentioned before there are two types of bike rentals. The first one and most common is the QR-type Ttareungi. This is a recently introduced method of renting using a QR code without a rental verification number.

Each bicycle has a QR code at the bottom of the seat, so all you need after purchasing the ticket is to scan the code using the in-app camera. After QR authentication, the lever will go down and the rental time will start. When the rental starts, you will get a notification on your phone or Kakaotalk.

LCD Bikes

The second type is the LCD Ttareungyi. In this case, you will need to enter the rental verification number on the LCD.

For first-time use, you need to press the center button and register a password. The next time you use Ttareungyi you will need to enter the same password, so please remember it! After removing your bike from the cradle after entering the password, the rental time will start.

Return

After your cycling adventure is over. It’s time to return. For the QR type bikes, you can return them to any rental station. There is a lever on the left side of the Ttareungi lock. If you pull the lever downwards until you hear it click, and the return is completed.

For the LCD type, you can return it to specific rental stations that are marked in green on the app’s map. All you need to do is to connect the line on the cradle. If all the cradles are in use, each of the connected bicycles has a connection line, you can pull one out and connect it to your bicycle instead. When the return is complete, you will get a return notification message on your phone or Kakaotalk. Always make sure that you get a message to avoid extra fees!

And that is all you need to know about renting Seoul’s public bikes. Enjoy the ride and always drive safely
